Italy: COVID-19 Entry Requirements All Travelers Need To Know

Italy is one of the most beautiful countries in the world bursting with rich history, culture, gorgeous beaches and stunning architecture. 

With over 60 million annual tourists, Italy is the fifth most visited country in the world. 

Here are all the latest COVID-19 entry requirements all travelers need to know before booking their trip.

Entry Requirements For Countries Permitted to Visit Italy For Tourism

The following countries are permitted to enter Italy for tourism under the following entry requirements: 

No Restrictions:

  • All EU Countries (Excluding Croatia, Greece, Malta, Spain, Romania and Bulgaria)
  • All Schengen Countries
  • United Kingdom
  • Micro-nations: Andorra, Monaco, Vatican City, San Marino

COVID-19 PCR Test Required (no older than 72 hours of arrival) or PCR Test on Arrival:

  • Croatia
  • Greece
  • Malta
  • Spain

14 Day Quarantine Required:

  • Australia
  • Bulgaria
  • Canada
  • Georgia
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Korea
  • Romania
  • Rwanda
  • Thailand
  • Tunisia
  • Uruguay

Countries not listed on any of the above lists are NOT permitted to visit Italy for tourism.

COVID-19 Testing Entry Requirements

The following countries REQUIRE COVID-19 testing: Croatia, Greece, Malta and Spain

Travelers coming from the above countries must undergo COVID-19 testing by either:

A) Presenting proof of a negative COVID-19  PCR test performed within 72 hours before entering the national territory

OR

B) Undergo a PCR test upon arrival at the airport/border.

Quarantine Entry Requirements 

Travelers arriving from: Bulgaria, Romania, Australia, Canada, Georgia , Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay must self-quarantine for 14 days.

Travelers must stay within their own accommodations using their own bedroom and bathroom if possible. 

Travelers may be contacted daily by a public healthcare professional in order to obtain information on their health conditions.

COVID-19 Travel Insurance Entry Requirements 

All incoming travelers should have travel insurance the covers COVID-19 for the duration of their trip to Italy 

COVID-19 Health Requirements While in Italy

All visitors must follow COVID-19 health requirements while in Italy:

From August 16th, Italy has ordered mask wearing in all public spaces from 6pm – 6am and a three-week closure of all dance venues.

Masks are mandatory in all indoor public spaces.

COVID-19 Vaccine Entry Requirements 

A vaccine for COVID-19 is not yet available to the public. Italy has not announced if a proof of vaccination record (POVR) will be mandatory for entry. 

Visa Entry Requirements For Italy During COVID-19

All travelers arriving in Italy will still need to follow Italian visa requirements. 

Use this government tool to find out if you need a visa to enter Italy.

Travelers that require a visa must submit an application, together with all necessary documents, in person at the Italian embassy/consulate in their home country.
