Five Things We Love: Mexico City

Image
My husband and I take an anniversary trip each year, and this year we headed south to explore Mexico City . We hoped it would hit all our favorite vacation necessities: culture, art, architecture, style, and, of course, food. When friends heard we were going, several asked if it’s safe; I’m happy to report that I felt very safe and at ease the entire time. As with any big city, just use a little common world-traveler sense. What we found exceeded our expectations. I loved the juxtaposition of traditional and modern found in every aspect of the city – there’s good reason it’s the World Design Capital for 2018. Here are five of my favorite discoveries. 1. Tacos. Food. More Tacos. I can safely say Mexico City’s tacos are life-changing. From green-chorizo tacos to tacos al pastor served on the street, each bite left me wanting … another taco! Virtuoso Traveler: October/November 2017

Food for thought: Culinary-based travels offer one of the best ways to experience another culture, which is why we’ve devoted the latest issue of Virtuoso Traveler to this tasteful theme. Get the dish on farm-fresh fare from Napa Valley to New Hampshire, whisky tours in Scotland, traditional cooking classes in Sri Lanka, Burgundy’s new wave of winemakers, and what’s for dinner in the world’s new culinary capitals (think barbecue in Charleston, sustainable seafood in Auckland, and vegetable-and-spice dishes in Tel Aviv). Also on the menu: travel-friendly gourmet gear, alternative dining venues at sea, and an insider’s guide to Paris – including the tables to reserve now. -Joel Centano, Editor of Virtuoso Traveler Virtuoso Traveler: October/November 2017

Spain’s G&T Craze (And Who Serves Barcelona’s Best)

Image
BY LANEE LEE Over the last few years, the Gin & Tonic (G&T) trend has exploded throughout Spain – especially in Barcelona. Bars – and knowledgeable bartenders – dedicated to el gin tonic (as Spaniards order it) have transformed the drink from commonplace to cocktail sensation. Spaniards usually drink theirs over tapas after dinner, and with the variety and complexity of offerings, it’s no surprise Spain consumes more gin than any other European Union country. Gin & tonics in Spain use botanicals like cherries, herbs, and nasturtium flowers rather than the classic lime garnish. Sip Stations : Bobby Gin Barcelona Fun and irreverent – except for the cocktails – this bar is staffed with tenders who excel at knowing what kind of G&T you’ll love, even before you do. Carrer de Francisco Giner 47. Solange Cocktails & Luxury Spirits Named for a Bond girl and run by Adriana Chia, the first woman to snag Spain’s World Class Best Bartender award, this sleek space is pur...
